• Atypical Flutter is often used to describe any circuit that is not dependant upon the right atrial isthmus.
• Included in this group are scar mediated flutters, upper loop flutters, crista flutters and left atrial flutters.

Using this definition, the most common atypical flutters are scar mediated flutters found in the right atrium. These flutters utilized atriotomy scars as the zones of critical slow conduction. Another subset of this classification of flutters is the post Fontan surgery flutters that sometimes occur years after surgery when the patient is in their teens. There are also more rare left atrial flutters that most commonly occur after ablation procedures for atrial fib. All of these flutters will be discussed below.
